“Notice Me” Isn’t a Music Marketing Strategy

Not all “friends” are created equal. I think that all the connectivity and interactivity that’s happening on the new Web is a wonderful thing. But it’s also a two sided coin. There’s a dark side to it. The social Web has become a diversion to many people who see it as this bright, shiny new object with little relevance to the offline world.
Because the music industry has been so severely destabilized and defined by the social Web, musicians are especially prone to having what I call the “notice me” syndrome. It’s basically a situation where you pour huge amounts of time and effort into finding followers and accumulating comments without much thought as to how it all fits into a grander strategy.
MySpace started it all. Now, we have Twitter, which is even more addictive. All of these social networking platforms are wonderful and essential, but many people have become so consumed with the attention they think they deserve that they’ve lost sight of the what it means to build real and authentic connections.
It’s entirely possible to have those kinds of connections online. But to do so you have to focus on the quality and depth of your communications with followers rather than on just the quantity of people who follow you.
Every once in a while, I’ll get a direct message on Twitter from some indie musician prompting me to check out his link or track or whatever. That’s not real or authentic connection. It’s just attention-getting. Don’t get me wrong. Attention can be fine, but as long as it fits into some larger goal.
Instead of trying to get attention just for attention’s sake, get attention with the goals in mind of:
– Becoming trusted
– Being engaged with
– Teaching something
Trust, engagement and teaching contribute real value. You can convert them into real world profit. This is all pretty simple stuff, but not easy to execute because it takes lots of time and effort.
The best marketers in the coming decades won’t be people who know how to design the coolest logo or make the slickest videos. They’ll be people who have a deep understand of human nature because human nature never changes and it’s universal.
All you have to do to understand what truly motivates people to connect is to ask yourself what motivates you to connect. We’re all the same. What are the things that make you trust and want to engage with others? Well, it’s the same for others.
Do you like being spammed? Well, then don’t spam others because they’re just like you. Success as a music marketer in the future will demand that you be a moral and ethical human being. That is one rule you cannot break.
Ultimately, the Web is about real relationships. It’s about real people. We all used to think the Web was run by pimply faced losers with no social skills. It’s not. It’s run by everyone. You have to build authentic relations before you can even begin to think about selling anything. Think quality, not numbers.

The next generation of social networks will go even further by understanding the different levels of trust that individuals have within their own social graphs. There’s people out there yearning to connect with your personal brand. They’re yearning to earn your trust. Don’t just try to get noticed. Work hard to earn their trust. The digital tools are all at your disposal.
You just need to come up with good content and good ideas. One thing I would recommend you do is publish your ideas through a blog because before people can trust you, they need to trust your ideas.

Make Music – Produce Your Own Songs Using 3 Simple Steps

Music is consistently becoming a more popular form of entertainment, both for professionals and hobbyists. With the current advances in music technology, the gap between the music enthusiast and the studio producer is becoming smaller. Using the right gear and practicing the right skills, a home based musician can make a modest recording of his songs and sell them (or give them for free) online. For those of you just starting out, or for those who want to rewind the basics, here is the key to music production in 3 simple steps:
1. Pre-production
Pre-production is the preparation part before the actual production process. The checklist consists of:
1. Songwriting. This includes composing and arranging the songs (e.g choosing the key, tempo, time signature, and genre of the song. Also choosing the instrumentation or orchestration to be used in the final song form)
2. Choosing and auditioning players. If you’re in a band, then usually you already have all the musicians you need to perform the song you wrote. But if you’re a solo artist or singer-songwriter, usually you want to hire session players or ask a favor from your music friends who play for a hobby or side job.
3. Setting a deadline and a budget. Having a deadline is important because it pushes you to make a deal with yourself. An artist can spend literally years on a single song, trying to perfect it. A deadline helps put the song into context and into release. Planning a budget is also important. An example of consideration of costs is whether to use a real string ensemble or settle for sampled strings for your song. Planning studio sessions ahead of time helps to avoid lengthy and costly studio sessions.
2. Production
Production is the actual production process of the song that includes these following tasks:
1. Recording. The recording session can be done live (all instruments and vocals at once) or tracking (recording the song per part or per instrument). The choice is determined by your genre and the feel you want to get, e.g if you play jazz, playing together and keeping eye contact is important to preserve the energy.
2. Overdub. This is done after the initial recording, usually after tracking. Some musicians sound great live and during the first takes, but most musicians will need to overdub (recording a part on top of another part) certain parts of the song, e.g doubling acoustic guitar or vocal harmony for the lead.
3. Editing & Mixing. After the parts are recorded and you are satisfied with the raw sound, editing and mixing aims to enhance and bring out the qualities you want in the song. Rock music for example, tends to sound edgy and raw, while pop ballads tends to be decorated with lush reverbs.
3. Post production
After the recording and mixing is done, the final step of music production to do is:
1. Mastering. Usually you want to use a professional mastering engineer for this part. Although some indie producers would claim that they master their own materials (especially home studio owners), professional opinions say that there is no such thing as self-mastering. Professional mastering aims to balance between songs in your album, or further enhance your recorded single. Most self-mastering only manages to raise the volume to a commercial-sounding level, but not preserving or enhancing the dynamics of the song.
2. Duplication. This is necessary if you want to sell physical CD’s. The mastering process produces what is called a Master, which is then used to create the CD’s for distribution in record stores. If you want to market in digital only, then you don’t need to make a physical master, but a “digital master” – the best quality digital audio you can afford to make. This digital master is usually compressed into streaming or download friendly MP3’s.
3. Marketing. The music industry is currently undergoing a transformation. The major record labels don’t hold as much control over artists as they used to. More and more artists are using the internet and social media for direct to fan marketing. Your choice in this area reflects your branding as an artist too. Being an indie blues singer-songwriter who sells your own CD’s during concerts will give you a different image than a foxy R&B songbird under a major label umbrella. Let Music Improve Your Quality of Life

Music has the power to excite and soothe. Listening to that favorite passage in your favorite song relaxes you like nothing else.
Until recently, there has been little scientific research to support the effectiveness of music to combat specific ailments or maladies. It has been studies and found that music has an affect on some key areas of the mind that regulates certain biological functions. We always suspected that music had a calming and even a healing effect but now there is evidence to prove why.
The best choice of music depends upon each individual’s taste and preference. Whether it is first thing in the morning or late in the evening also depends upon the choice of the listener.
Researchers speculate that when a person listens to a particular passage of music, it can bring up positive memories that person associates with that specific song. This can cause an overall relaxation effect that lowers respiration rate, heart rate and even blood pressure. In a study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, volunteers were asked to solve a difficult math problem. After three stressful minutes, they were divided into separate groups and listened to passages of jazz, pop and classical music. Those who listened to classical music had lower systolic blood pressure readings than those in the other two groups.
What you can take from this is you should observe yourself when you listen to different styles of music you like. Try to match your music to the tempo and rhythm you feel in your mind. For example, some people really dislike classical music in any form and respond better to country because that is the style of music that resonates with that person’s personality and preferences.
There is also hope for insomniacs. As adults age, some begin to have difficulty falling asleep. Soft, peaceful music, again matched to the individual’s personal taste, can have a profound effect on their level of relaxation which in turn leads to falling asleep.
Try and create a calm, cool environment. Make the room quiet and dark. Do not watch tv or read. Do not exercise or exert yourself within two hours of bedtime. I use an MP3 player with a small stereo boom box. I set the timer on both for 45 minutes so that it will turn off by itself.
Pick a style of music that you find relaxing. This could even be music with embedded recordings of nature such as water falls, waves at the beach or the sound of wildlife, whatever works for you. I personally have a classical playlist with these sounds and I can never make it past the third song!

The Problem With Music Advocacy

Have we, as an interested group in music education, damaged our own efforts simply by labeling it as “music advocacy?” I, along with many music educators, am very thankful for “VH1 Save the Music,” and other music advocacy efforts. But only those who are already passionate about the value of music education truly champion those efforts. Although the term, “music advocacy,” has its place within the circle of music supporters, it is a misrepresentation in general society.
The word, “advocacy,” indicates helping an underdog. It places it in a category of sympathetic efforts toward something worthwhile in need of saving. Contemplate the term, “child advocate.” What pictures come to mind? Visual images of children in need pulling on your heart-strings of giving, right? We love them and want to do more for them, but invoking emotions of sympathy only reaches a few. Think of all the phrases that include the word, “advocate,” or “advocacy.” What is your instant emotion? pity? charity? sympathy? empathy? left-wing? righteous? desire to fight for the cause?
Why do we feel that way? It indicates a need to fight for the defenseless, vulnerable, needy. Who puts on the gloves and does the defending? The one’s closest to the underdog. Those with a deep compassion and emotion connected to the victim.
How do they fight for the victim? They work to bring the world’s attention to the problem. They paint graphic pictures through word and images that guilt people into giving. Those most passionate for the defenseless work tirelessly, attempting multiple methods to reach the masses, but only winning a few.
Music is not the underdog in reality, just in the education system, and in lack of funding. In our efforts to improve the perception and financial support, we sabotage the greater mission to revere and admire. Music is not something to sympathize, but to admire and seek to aspire to greatness. What if we turned sympathy into admiration?
People love winners. People love champions. People want to be part of the winning team. It inspires them to go after their dream and admire those who did and succeeded. For example, I’m not much of a sports fan, but when the local high school team begins advancing to the state playoffs, I’m there with the rest of the town. Everyone loves a winner. Sound familiar?
Now contemplate a contrasting picture-Shawn Johnson. Have you heard of her? A young girl from Iowa had a dream. With only the support of her family and coach, Shawn focused on the gold and passionately dedicated her time, energy and talent toward achieving excellence, and she did. Shawn obtained a gold and silver in the 2008 Olympics held in China-and hasn’t stopped yet.
Before the Olympic season, only those within the gymnastics’ circle knew of Shawn Johnson. Similar to only those within the music circle are aware of the benefits of music instruction in a person’s life. Shawn Johnson is not a sympathetic picture. No one is a martyr for Shawn Johnson. No one needs to be or even wants to be. Shawn Johnson is one girl who had a dream with an action plan. She had a small support team of her family and a coach. Shawn did not recruit “advocacy” groups to help pull her along and represent her case. She did not see herself as an underdog. She was going for the gold-the Olympic gold.
Did she dedicate a percentage of her time reaching for sympathy votes and support groups? No. As she poured her heart into her work, she began to excel and as she began to win, the world clamored to see her, learn about this incredible success story, take pride in her as one of our own in the U.S. Everyone admired Shawn’s dedication and proudly claimed her as a representative of what is possible when you aspire for excellence in your craft. For Shawn Johnson that is gymnastics. For us, it is music.
Millions of kids take gymnastics, but it’s only the excellent ones that the world wants to watch. Many people are involved in music, but it’s only incredible musicians that draws the world’s attention.
The large majority of U.S. citizens never attend, or watch, or participate in gymnastic events, but in the summer of 2008, all U.S. eyes were watching Shawn, willing her to win and celebrating her victories. Google Shawn Johnson and you will find articles and video clips from around the globe. Fan clubs and web pages came into being. All of this from one girl with a dream that took the necessary action to make it happen.
People love a winner. People want to be apart of the winning team. People gravitate and seek out winners. They want to be part of that dream.
Music is a winner. We, musicians and music educators, know that. Anyone who sits in an audience and is moved to tears from the sheer beauty of the perfectly sung notes in a musical or opera, or the exquisite sounds of the instruments in an orchestra or band that cause people to rise to their feet in impulsive applause, understands. Music experienced at that level does not evoke sympathy, but awe. Everyone that experienced the incredible music shares it with enthusiasm to anyone who will listen. Like a virus, everyone clamors to experience the magical moment created through music. All eyes turn toward the source of the inspiration and want to experience it again.
We know that, but does society? We need to stop portraying music education as an underdog needing rescued and start exclaiming the opportunities for incredible experiences unlike any other. If our music programs inspire and excel as winners, all eyes will turn to us and want to be part of what we are doing. They’ll experience what we already know and music will be viewed as the hero it already is.
“Music advocacy?” I don’t think so. Within our music circle? Maybe, but only within our circle. We need to view it as something with wondrous awe that we are excited to share, not defend. Does music education need more support and help to keep it in existence? Absolutely. No question. But we are going about it the wrong way. Outside of the music world, the phrase, “music advocacy,” hurts the mission before it even starts. The term indicates a solicitation for sympathy votes before you even understand what they are about. They only really effect those who are already passionate about music and already see the problem. Music education will NEVER be elevated and perceived with respect with labels that indicate defenseless losers and illicit pity.
Pursue excellence in music with a single-focused passion and people will follow. Pursue excellence in music education with passion and people will rally and clamor to be part of the success of their kids-your students.
We treat music education like a needy child trying to compete in an olympic games out of sympathy votes. Only eyes of pity on that child-and then they are fleeting. Music education needs to be Shawn Johnson, and in many schools it is perceived with admiration and respect. Music performed with excellence already is admired and respected with wonder and awe by those who have the privilege to witness it. There are many examples from Paul Potts and Susan Boyle to Kristen Chenoweth, Bobby McFerrin, Yoyo Ma, etc. Pursue excellence in music education and the world will notice and be inspired.
How do we achieve this? Teach kids with passion. Practice with passion. Conduct with passion. Educate parents with the beneficial facts of music education and instruction, but not as a plea, but as an exciting opportunity to involve their kids in the best. We have something that is in desperate need-smarter, brighter and more creative citizens. Music education instills, develops and exercises those qualities. We have wonderful tools available for today’s children.
Teach with passion and the term, “music advocacy,” will become obsolete.

Is Music Theory Essential for Beginner Bass Players?

Picture a scientist peeking through his microscope; examining a fine specimen called music. That is music theory. It is the science behind music. As for bass players, learning music theory at the beginning stage of their career will help create the foundation of controlled and dynamic musical capabilities. Creativity can only do so much and learning by the ear is not enough to create a wonderful masterpiece. Memorizing certain notes and charts offer a very limited working space for you. It will make you rigid and tentative. Always remember that when you’re on stage performing with your band, unexpected things can happen like a forgotten note pattern and mis-timed melody. These unforeseen events or twists while playing your song will ultimately test how well you can adapt and pull it off.
Early on your bass playing, you can get away with simple chord patterns and major notes. But to really get on top, you need to mess around with the big boys. Simple harmonies and progressions will not take you anywhere. The bass playing technique of Paul McCartney seems simple when you listen to it, but try to analyze it even further and you will soon realize how complex those scales are (Drive My Car, Dear Prudence and Something).
Learning music theory will widen your musical knowledge. It is not enough that you familiarize yourself with modern musical patterns, jazz and bluesy bass lines; explore the possibility of learning “exotic” chord patterns of the East such as: Persian scales, Ragas, Arabian scales and Hungarian Major Scales. In effect, you will be able to cater to different types of genre and culture while incorporating your own uniqueness.Studying music theory will help you discover what kinds of patterns, modals, structures and rhythms these cultures employ. While some music or genre doesn’t employ the use of bass guitar; there will always be an instrument which serves as the bass’ counterpart. World music is a perfect example of genre which employs both native and modern instruments. Blending in with different kinds of instrument while supporting the whole song is only possible provided that you have a good grasp of concepts and ideas about its framework; something that is possible by studying music theory.
Music theory is as important for bass players as basketball clinic to basketball players. Writers block is a problem that shows up in a different form for music producers. It’s rare for us to not be able start a project. Most likely you hit the problem of not being able to get in the groove producing anything that you consider a “keeper.” In those times, consider these 3 tips to get it moving again.
1. Work on assignment. I call this technique going to the well instead of waiting for rain. Sometimes I work free form, just letting the music happen. Other times I work on assignment. A client will ask for a specific style, genre, or sound. In those cases I have a destination in mind and a basic framework for what the end product should be. For me that’s much easier. I find that once I get going on this type of assignment, my creative forces take over and I eventually end up with a hot track.
The trick you can use is to create the assignment for yourself. Who says you have to have an outside client to challenge yourself. You can give yourself an assignment within a genre, style, and sound and get to work. The key is to get the assignment mapped out before you step into the studio to work on it.
Get the idea as fleshed out as much possible in your mind. Detail what the end work will sound like and the feeling it will bring when you hear it. If you go that far with it, you push your mind to call up those creative juices to create that feeling. Now when you hit the studio, you have the energy and path to run down.
2. Don’t start from scratch. Another trick I’ve used is almost like remixing my own work or creating variations of a previous work. Start by calling up an old project in the studio, giving yourself access to a ready made pallet of sounds, tempo, song structure, etc, then scrap everything you recorded except for a few elements. If you work using a midi sequencer, this is as simple as creating a copy of the project under a new name and deleting everything except for a simple element like the snare pattern.
At this point, you’re already a third of the way down the road to creating something new. You’ve got a pallet and a tempo and a snare pattern to build from. By the time your done, you might have ditched the original snare and found the session has pulled you in a new direction. And that’s what you wanted in the first place. Something new.
3. Call on The Masters. Some days, for me at least, the above two methods don’t get me going the way I want and the energy level still needs a boost. This is when I like call on The Masters. Depending on the genre I’m working in, I’ll play a few of the masterworks that convey the type of emotion or energy I’m after and also some tracks that are completely different.
For example, if I’m working on an R&B balled and nothing hits the mark, I might throw on some of the classic Janet Jackson joints produced Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and something instrumental like a passionate cello piece by Yo Yo Ma where the emotion is there without lyrics at all. Or some Billy Joel or Debussy, or Missy Elliot, or The Roots, or… you get the idea. Whatever you play, make sure it’s material you consider to be excellent, that sets the bar in your mind for what you want in the end from yourself. Throwing in some varied styles points your brain in new directions away from the roadblock you’d been facing and gets you shooting for the stars.
